Since Nikolai Tesla first spoke of the wireless transmission of energy back in the early nineteen-hundreds, the thought of instant communication and democratic participation has reached it's own level of critical mass here... Today. Today in 2007 we all in the developed and soon enough the developing world have reached the realization of this amazing opportunity - the essential nature of instant, ubiquitous total communication. Change is coming. No-one knows what it will be. There are two essential predictions in this fact of what is recently occurring in terms of global communications: Either the universal semaphore of integrated universal wireless communication will inevitably lead to greater understanding, peace, and prosperity in human advancement, or it will lead to confrontation, irreconcilable division and further hateful wars of ignorance and greed. Essentially the truth is that 'advancement' is inevitable and either outcome is possible, individually or in sequential or combined eventual. This brings us back to Tesla - who knew himself, that these wires can conceivably carry not just power, but signals... dangerous, but inevitable impulses conveying meaning between disparate, different, divided peoples. Perhaps things will just stay the same. Maybe The World Won't Listen, but just talk on and on, not realising the freedom lost when even the slightest curiosity is censored, and all debate reduced to two duelling interests, for the shadows to rule. But then again... they might just come together and render a different conclusion, stabilizing, mobilizing and democratizing the world. The greatest inventors believed in open source technology, and Tesla was no different in this - he gave away more millions in his life over patent laziness then has hitherto been as notorious. He gave away $12,000,000 just to ensure his superior technology won against Edison and General Electric. He knew as all free men do. That his ideas were not his, but from the grace of a higher power, even if it simply be collective human ingenuity itself. In this increasingly wired Wireless world the Governments and People's of nations are facing each other, as Puritans to "native primitives" or as Corrupt Demons to a bovine herd. Yet within each caste there are those that believe in liberty and equality for all as not meaningless symbols, but goals of a teleological society. A society with purpose. A Purpose for the common wealth of all, not the common wealth of few. When all is cared about is the pursuit of wealth, is it any wonder we form a most violent world, where rich get richer and the poor get fucked. Is it any wonder Tesla wrote of his own "Demons" in digging ditches and manufacturing terrible weapons in order to simply survive? Every other generation the peoples of the world have marched to war hailing of a false democracy and supposed freedom. Anyone with Internet access now has the capability to reach to the other side of the world. To scheme, conspire and collaborate. Naturally the wireless revolution is like all revolutions led by a cadre of intelligent self-sufficient individuals - yet never has communication, learning, and emancipation been so free that choose to see it and use it. This revolution is different because slowly as it becomes available to all the poor and oppressed peoples of the world - it will make disunity and harmony hopefully more impossible and illogical. Which all is precisely why: Net Neutrality is important. Through open source technologies more people then ever can utilise the inherent power of information for their writing, causes, and campaigns. Just like international trade opened the world between nations, so international trade in ideas is leading to a world of empowered individuals. When before have so many known the names of those so far, so many whom they feel no influence of, apart from the influence they themselves choose. In the currency of thought, censored information is the first of many inflationary pressures. If Publishing becomes forced to be more about distribution of the popular as it is, rather then the promulgation of much simpler propaganda as is was before the Internet came along...then so much better for the use of ideas and dialogue. As it is, The revolution in Publishing and the Revolution in Music dissemination and self-promotion are just part of a broader phenomenon across the planet of people using the means coming into their hands - to reach out for a better world. Only when all information is free, will people themselves remove one of the tangible constraints on their freedom in general. Information is just another aspect of power, and it's control should be in the hands of everyone. Not just the few. As Bob Marley said: "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery - no one but ourselves can free our minds" And I feel, Tesla would have gotten Bob's beat there, and just for the record I would also invite Hitler to my dinner party. |
